Speedwell End of Year Note

End of Year Note From the CEO

2013 was a demanding year both economically and politically yet we have much to be proud of.

For Speedwell, July was a particularly busy month due to our acquisition of Big Bridge. We’ve enjoyed getting to know all of our new clients and partnering with some great businesses.

More recently, in November we were delighted to receive a number of industry awards:

  • Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Innovation Awards for our Dossiere secure document management system
  • 2013 Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Australia Award. Speedwell has received this distinguished growth award four times since 2007
  • 2013 Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific Award. Speedwell has received this distinguished growth award three times since 2007.

This year we also partnered with KPMG to ensure that our clients gain the benefits from the R&D Tax Incentive. For those of you who are not aware, you may be eligible for up to 45% refundable tax offsets for the work that we perform. Please contact us if you’d like to discuss this further or have any questions.

Over the past few years there has been an increase in the number of disruptive products and services being released. Companies have been forced to think creatively as they battle transaction and distribution costs, the need to reduce waste, and an ever increasing focus on clean energy and a reduction in greenhouse gases.

Particularly relevant to our industry is the concept of “The Public Cloud” and more specifically the emergence of Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the dominant player. AWS are of particular interest to us for a number of reasons:

  1. All of our clients consume hosting services
  2. The technology they sell is a by-product of their book selling business
  3. Their model combines scalability and redundancy in a cost effective way
  4. Their services are genuinely green. In effect you can turn off your infrastructure when you are not using it – or allow someone else to use your excess infrastructure

Amazon Web Services launched its Australian data centre in November 2012. ASIC documents show that they recognised revenue in excess of $25m in calendar year 2012. Not bad for two months of operation … I understand that they have already exceeded the $100m mark, which in Australia already makes them larger than Melbourne IT.

On a global scale, AWS’ turnover for 2013 will exceed the combined turnover of their 5 largest competitors. From a purely economic viewpoint, the opening of AWS’s Sydney data centres has disrupted the hosting scene forever by making available world class public cloud functionality along with local data storage. While we are not recommending that all data and systems go into the cloud, it is certainly worth evaluating your specific needs against current offerings.

Please contact us if you are interested in hearing more about flexible and scalable cloud hosting both public and private sector.

At Speedwell, we are privileged to work within many diverse industries and businesses, use multiple platforms and implement exciting and ground-breaking technology with the general aim to improve our clients’ productivity and profitability. We welcome you to take a look at our Portfolio page that showcases some of the brilliant work our teams have achieved this year.

Having done this for nearly 17 years we understand that digital is a marathon rather than a sprint. As the digital landscape matures we’re seeing a greater need for business strategy to align with their digital strategy.

We encourage all our client’s to contact their Account Manager, Brett Wiskar, or me for a friendly discussion about any digital or technological challenges your business may be facing.

On behalf of Speedwell, I would like to say thank you to our clients, partners, staff and their families for helping to make this year possible.

Have a great Christmas, and I look forward to working with you in the new year.
